Project Description

This beautifully designed outdoor living space in Wyckoff, NJ, is a testament to the power of thoughtful planning and expert craftsmanship. Faced with significant elevation challenges and tight spatial constraints, we transformed this once-inaccessible yard into a seamless, functional, and intimate retreat. The raised patio now serves as a multi-functional space, featuring a BBQ area, firepit, and lush plantings, all carefully arranged to create a private and inviting atmosphere. A meticulously designed drainage system ensures the space remains functional and beautiful year-round, even during heavy rain events.

1. Significant Elevation Differences
  The original site had a 16- to 18-inch grade difference, making the space inaccessible. Raising the patio required a careful balance of engineering and design.
2. Managing Water Flow
  Before adding any design elements, we had to implement a drainage system to prevent runoff and flooding, ensuring the space remains dry and usable.
3. Maximizing a Compact Space
  This intimate backyard needed to accommodate a BBQ area, dining space, and firepit while maintaining an open, welcoming feel. Careful zoning and furniture placement made it all possible.
4. Maintaining Long-Term Scale and Privacy
  To create a private oasis, we used Green Giant Arborvitae, a species that provides excellent screening. We also implemented a strategic pruning plan to prevent overgrowth while maintaining the perfect balance of privacy and openness.
Through careful planning and expert execution, we transformed these challenges into a cohesive, inviting, and highly functional outdoor space that allows the homeowners to cook, relax, and entertain with ease.
