Where the Wild Waited: A Backyard Rewritten
West Milford, NJ
Learn More About the Project
Project Description
In the quiet slopes of West Milford, a simple backyard gave way to something extraordinary. The canvas: a rugged landscape of ledge rock, wind-brushed trees, and a modest deck tucked into the natural terrain. The vision: a space that didn’t fight the land but folded into it, a place where weekends unfurl, meals linger, and barefoot happiness lives in every corner.
Anchoring the transformation is a sweeping, organically shaped lagoon pool, its curves echoing the surrounding stone and slope. Natural boulder outcroppings, sourced to match indigenous geology, cradle the pool’s edges and blur the lines between what was built and what always belonged. Layered native grasses and flowering prairie perennials cascade along soft berms, offering privacy, softness, and a new delight with every season.
A custom pavilion invites guests beneath a dark-stained cedar frame to linger longer, outfitted with an outdoor kitchen, bar seating, infrared heaters, and a full entertainment system. Multiple patios flow outward, including a sun-lounging nook with oversized boulders and slate slabs guiding your way. Each space connects, not just structurally, but emotionally.
Whispered to life in stone and bloom, where every moment feels like homecoming.
-
Naturalistic Lagoon Pool: Raised beam gunite pool positioned for optimal views, with indigenous boulders set into the landscape to create seamless integration.
Native and Prairie-Inspired Plantings: A carefully curated palette of ornamental grasses, prairie perennials, and spring bulbs create layered texture and a wild-yet-refined look.
Custom Timber Pavilion: A cozy structure designed for year-round outdoor living, with bar, smoker, heating, and media built in.
Multi-Zoned Outdoor Living: Soft transitions between deck, patio, kitchen, dining, and pool lounging zones, all connected but individually intimate.
Natural Stone Steps: Organic walkways and lounge nooks enhance flow and encourage discovery.
Soft Screening: Berms and evergreen layers soften property lines while framing distant views.

Working within the constraints of an existing deck, grill area, and stone wall, we prioritized thoughtful integration over starting from scratch. This design required nuance: honoring what the homeowners loved while weaving in expansive new elements. Early pool layout ideas clashed with natural slopes and views, but when we shifted the pool closer to the rock ledge and elevated the sun shelf, everything clicked.
Natural topography also presented significant drainage challenges. A French drain system and custom catch basins were carefully concealed among grasses and stone, maintaining beauty while ensuring function.
Every material was chosen with intention, from regionally matched boulders that will patina over time, to Carrick grasses camouflaging utility features, to perennials planted for long-view seasonal rhythm. This space had to feel natural, not new, and that required vision, restraint, and heart.
-
Before: A blank lawn with scattered hardscape, disconnected spaces, and few places to pause or gather.
After: A symphony of stone, water, and planted rhythm, a backyard born from the land itself, inviting connection at every step.
